Beach Cruisin

Hello friends,

Happy Friday!  The weather has been absolutely gorgeous this week, and I can’t wait for the official start of summer mañana.  And nothing makes me happier when the weather gets warmer than having a flexible schedule.  This week, Nathan and I went to La Jolla to do some scouting for two upcoming photoshoots.  It was overcast during the early afternoon, which made for some great lighting.  I played model for a bit so we could test the location and effects of June Gloom, and so I thought I’d share some of the pictures with you.  It was a J.Crew Everything kinda day, as usual.

The water was preeeetty cold at first, but once I got my feet wet I couldn’t stay away.  The waves were crystal clear, and it turned into a stunningly beautiful day.  Oh, and we did some model casting too.  😉

Fresh From the WSJ: Dear J.Crew, What Happened to Us?

Hello friends!

I’m finally able to share some exciting news with you: I was interviewed by the Wall Street Journal about one of my favorite topics, J.Crew!  You might remember reading this post about the declining quality I’ve seen in some J.Crew pieces over the years.  Well, I was not alone: Elizabeth Holmes’s well-written article includes numerous other women who’ve experienced the same disappointment with J.Crew {and the comments are piling up}.  You can read the article online here, and it includes one of Nathan’s beautiful pictures from this blog post!  The article will also be the Personal Style section of the printed version tomorrow!!

Elizabeth did a wonderful job with the article, and although it discusses frustrations with the brand, I believe the takeaway is positive: we love our J.Crew!  It’s been my favorite brand since college, and I continue to add pieces to my wish list.  I hope that the article helps J.Crew get back on track, and I look forward to the day when my “no shopping” ban is over and I can add some new pieces to my wardrobe (like this adorable dress!).

I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve experienced some of the same issues discussed in the article.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Closet Remix: J.Crew Factory Textured Cotton Dress

Hello friends!

My trusty photographer snapped a few pictures of my outfit today, so I thought it would be the perfect time for another closet remix post.  I bought this J.Crew Factory textured cotton dress in May 2014, but it’s back again this season in bright, fun colors.  And here are some other cute coral options {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}.

I’m participating in a fabulous colorblock style challenge, and today’s prompt was cobalt + coral.  I paired this bright Seaside Coral dress with J.Crew Martina suede wedges {similar-ish}, a J.Crew Factory stretch classic button-down shirt {similar}, and American Eagle aviators {similar}. Colorblocking is wearing two or more solid colors in an outfit, with no patterns or prints — soooo hard!  But I really love this color combination, so I’m going to have to bring it back in the future (with stripes!).  Thanks to the lovely Shannon for dreaming up this colorful challenge.  ❤

If you’ve never tried aviator sunglasses, American Eagle has numerous pairs that are each less than $15!  I have three, and I am impressed by the quality and durability.  Plus a number of people have asked me if they were Ray-bans, which is always fun when you’re wearing something that costs exponentially less.

Here are two more ways I’ve worn this darling dress.  The textured cotton gives it a bit of stiffness, which I like, but it does tend to get wrinkly after you sit for a while.  And you know I’m a sucker for any dress with pockets!

Makeup Monday: Naked 3

Hello friends!

If you haven’t picked up a Naked eyeshadow palette yet, I recommend trying one out. The shadows are highly pigmented, easy to blend, and you can create a ton of different looks with the various colors and textures (mattes, satins, shimmer, and glitter).  I have all three, but honestly the only one I use on a regular basis is Naked3.

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 6.28.03 PM

The original Naked palette is great for warmer complexions (golds, browns, and taupe nudes), and Naked2 is perfect for cool toned gals (grays and beiges).  Naked3 is full of rose-hued neutrals, and if you have green eyes (or greenish blueish eyes, like me), this palette is the one you need.

The colors are just gorgeous and surprisingly wearable for day and night.  I was worried that there would be glittery fallout, but the shadows appear more shimmery than glittery, and I haven’t had any issues with staying power.  (Although I always use a primer first, usually M·A·C’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot in painterly (here) or this.) Today I used the shades Limit and Nooner on the crease and Liar on my upper and lower lids.  Here’s how it turned out:

See what I mean about wearable?  The colors are more subtle than they appear in the pan, but in a good way (not in a “why did I spend $60 for eyeshadows that don’t show up” way).  These rose hues, coupled with an orchid colored mascara, brings out the green in my eyes and really makes them pop.  And because the shadows are still neutral, they work with almost any lip color.

Here are the rest of the products I used today:

  • By Terry Terrybly Densiliss foundation in shade 2, cream ivory (available at Barneys, SpaceNK, or Beauty.com)
  • Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow (at Nordstrom)
  • By Terry Terrybly Growth Booster mascara in mystic orchid (at Barneys, SpaceNK, or Beauty.com)
  • Yves Saint Laurent ‘Dessin du Regard Waterproof’ Eye Pencil in simmering burgundy (at Nordstrom)
  • NARS Radiant creamy concealer in Chantilly (at Sephora)
  • NARS Satin lip pencil in Palais Royal (at Sephora)

Not pictured:

And just for fun, here is the rest of my outfit — head to toe J.Crew (Emmaleigh dress in bright seaside, Martine satin sling back heels in sour lemon, gold and glass beaded necklace, merino michelle v-neck cardigan, and large leather gallery hobo).  Yes, I am a J.Crew addict {although everything except the dress is from 2008-2009}.  🙂

Five Years a French

Hello friends!

Five years ago today I married my best friend.  In Las Vegas.  By Elvis.  It was unbelievably fun, surprisingly romantic, and I wouldn’t change a thing!  I posted details of my outfit here, but thought I would share our hilarious wedding video with you all today.  Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.  😉

Closet Remix: Lady Lawyer

Hello friends!

It’s been a little over two months since I retired my business suits.  I even moved them into our office closet!  My bedroom closet {let’s be real, it’s not “ours”} is now filled with bright colors, patterns, and casual{ish} pieces that make me happy.  And I’m slowly but surely finding my new non-lady lawyer style, thanks in large part to Instagram style challenges.

I’ve had a few kind women mention that they miss seeing my work posts on Instagram, so I thought I’d share a few remixes with my favorite suits.  J.Crew suiting was the backbone of my professional wardrobe, especially the super 120s wool.  But I must note that the pricing has skyrocketed since I first started buying suits, while the quality has declined.  {Read more about this here.}  That said, J.Crew is offering 30% off through April 26th with the code “TIMETOSHOP,” so if you’re in the market for suiting, this is the time to stock up!

Personally, I’m not a fan of pants suits.  I’ve tried a few different styles and they just don’t work for me.  And after spending many hours in court watching fellow lady lawyers stand and argue, I’ve come to the conclusion that pants suits don’t work for a lot of women.  My two cents: if you want to rock a pants suit, you must get them tailored.  And be sure to look at your pants from all angles {take a selfie if you can’t get to a three way mirror!}.  Unstructured wool can be very unkind to even the most fabulous derriere. 😉

I prefer to buy three piece suits: dress, jacket, and pencil skirt.  I like having options, and this combo is fantastic for business travel.  I’m wearing the Emmaleigh and Bridget dresses in the pictures below, which are sadly no longer available, but I’m swooning over this bow-shoulder dress.  J.Crew Factory also has great suiting options at more affordable prices, including a dead-ringer for my beloved Emmaleigh dress (1, 23). Both J.Crew and J.Crew Factory sell pinstripe options as well (1, 2, 3, 4).

I’ve shared a few different ways I styled my suits in the past: hope you enjoy!  {Need more inspiration?  Click here.}  Since all of my suiting is neutral, I add a pop of color or a fun pattern in my shoes or tops {and lipstick, of course}, and almost always wear tights to combat courtroom air conditioning.  And even though I’m no longer wearing them on a regular basis, I’m still dreaming about that perfectly tailored red suit…

Thank you very much for stopping by!

Jenn

Face of the Day: Bronze Eyes & Glowing Skin

Hello, friends!

Rabbit, rabbit!  I can’t believe it’s April already; this year is just flying by.

I always love “Face of the Day” posts, so I thought I’d share one of my own with you today.  As I’ve mentioned before, I am not a professional by any means; just a girl who loves makeup! This look features some of my favorite face and eye products, and a pinky-nude lip.  Here’s a non-edited picture in natural light:

And here are the products I used to get this look {although I just realized I forgot to include lip products…  Doh!}.

Not pictured:

  • The most important step – skincare!  I use Rodan + Fields (read about it here)
  • By Terry Terrybly Densiliss primer (available at BarneysSpaceNK, or Beauty.com)
  • Clé de Peau Beauté concealer in Ivory (available at Nordstrom, Saks, or Barneys)
  • Nars lipstick in Roman Holiday (available at Nordstrom or Sephora)
  • Michael Kors Eau de Parfum + Lip Gloss Duo (I just discovered it’s no longer available at Sephora, but they carry it at Macy’s) ** I absolutely adore this scent!

Here’s one more non-edited photo, this time outside with indirect natural light.

I used a flat iron to curl my hair, which is a work in progress.  I’ve tried it three times with extremely varied results!  This one ended up more curly than wavy.  My hair has never been great at holding curls, but I find that the waves/curls last much longer with a flat iron than a regular curling iron.

Finally, here are a few photographs that my husband took with his {actual} camera, {versus my iPhone selfies}.  🙂  They are digitally enhanced but I think they still look fairly natural.  My dress and necklace are from J.Crew Factory and the shoes are J.Crew.  {Don’t worry, no cats were harmed during the filming.}

Hope you liked this look!  I’m absolutely nuts about the Colour Pop eye shadows; if you haven’t tried one yet, I can’t recommend them enough.  And at $5 you can try four colors for the price of one eye shadow from many other companies!

Thanks so much for reading!
