Makeup Monday: the Best Brushes

Hello, friends!

I’ve been talking a lot about my favorite makeup products, but I realize I’ve left out one of the most important categories – the tools!  I’ve tried a lot of makeup brushes over the years, but there is one line that simply blows all the competition out of the water: the amazing brushes by Wayne Goss.

Wayne Goss Brush Review

Wayne a makeup artist out of the U.K. who makes some of my favorite YouTube videos: tutorials, reviews, tips, and more.  He’s not only a talented artist, but a genuinely awesome person.  His videos are informative, helpful, hilarious, and, above all, honest.  He’s shared some very personal details about his life, as well as candid conversations about cosmetic procedures and skincare.

.

I’ve been a fan for years, so when I heard Wayne was designing a line of brushes, I couldn’t wait to snap them up!   Here’s my collection {so far 😉}:

Wayne Goss brush review

Starting at the top and moving clockwise: Brush 16The Holiday BrushBrush 03Brush 06Brush 17Brush 02Brush 05Brush 11, and Brush 04.

Before Wayne Goss started making his amazing brushes, I thought I could only use synthetics. My eyes are extremely sensitive, and nearly every other natural hair brush I tried irritated my eyes or felt like they scratched or dragged my lids.  Wayne’s brushes are the softest brushes on the planet.  I’m talking kitten fur, pussy willow, golden retriever puppy soft.  I may or may not brush them on my face even without product from time to time. 😉 And I love that they are handcrafted and cruelty free.

The brushes are available both individually and in sets: the original Collection, the Face Set, and the Eye Set.  Honestly, I wish I would have just purchased the collections instead of buying individually; if you want to invest in quality brushes, you cannot go wrong with any one of these sets!  The next ones on my wish list are brushes 12, 13, 14, 19, and 20.  Beautylish includes detailed descriptions of how to use each of Wayne’s brushes, and he also made videos to walk you through each brush of the original Collection and the two sets.  Here’s the Face Set video, although fair warning: you’re going to want to buy them all immediately {and this anglophile just loves Wayne’s accent!}.

I have hooded/deep set eyes, and I find that Brush 04 is absolute perfection for adding definition in and above my crease.  The shape allows for precise application exactly where you want the color, and the softness makes blending an absolute dream.  It also picks up and holds the perfect amount of color with no fall out.  I’ve used this brush almost every single day since purchasing in January 2014 and it has not lost any of its shape or softness despite {nearly} weekly washings.  Brush 05 is also great for adding precise color into the crease, and it’s gentle enough to smudge eyeliner and shadow right into the lash line.  Here are brushes 03, 04, and 05 for size comparison {courtesy of Beautylish}:

Wayne Brushes 03 04 05 review

Brush 03 is perfect for that finishing touch; it’s larger size makes blending quick and easy, and it’s softness means you won’t undue any of your eye contour while still erasing any harsh lines. If I could only choose two eye brushes from the line, brushes 03 and 04 would be it (although that would be a tragedy, because they are each unique and amazing).  I love brush 06 for precise application of color onto my upper eyelid, but it’s slight curve allows you to blend and pull the shadow outwards {so it’s perfect for Charlotte Tilbury’s signature feline looks}.  Brush 17 is also one of my daily brushes for applying base color all over the lid.

Brush 16 is my favorite brush for applying and blending under eye concealer: in fact, it’s the only brush I’ve ever tried that blends concealer without streaks and doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes. I also love using it to whisk away excess powder after setting concealer for a seamless finish that will last all day.  I use the Holiday Brush to apply powder on my t-zone, and it’s slightly pointed tip allows for precise application while never disturbing your foundation.  And I love Brush 02 for highlighting, contouring, and applying bronzer.  It is an absolute dream with Charlotte Tilbury’s Bronze + Glow {Nordstrom or Beautylish} as well as the Urban Decay Naked Flushed palettes {Nordstrom or Sephora}.

Charlotte Tilbury Bronze and Glow Clinique BB Cream Wayne Goss Brush 02 11 By Terry Terrybly Mascara Benefit Gimme Brow Bobbi Brown Blush

Brush 11 is the best brush I have ever used for applying blush!  The rounded tip picks up the perfect amount of product, and the soft bristles allow you to blend without disturbing foundation one bit.  My go-to blush is Hourglass’s Ethereal Glow {Nordstrom or Sephora}, and this brush fits so perfectly into the compact I swear they were meant to be used together.  Brush 11 is also great for bronzing and powder, although I prefer the Holiday Brush to set my makeup. Brush 11 is irreplaceable in my collection and I use it every day.

Please don’t be intimidated by the prices: these brushes are worth the investment.  They are easy to clean, hold their shape, and the softness is unparalleled.  Although I do have some other brushes in my collection {mostly because I’m admittedly lazy and can’t bear the thought of washing more than once a week, at best}, I always reach for my Wayne Goss brushes first, and they are the only ones I travel with.

Speaking of washing, I’m off to do just that.  I hope you enjoyed this post, and I’d love to hear about your experiences with Wayne’s delightful brushes!  As always, thank you so very much for stopping by.

xoxo,
Jenn

Holy Grail Foundation #3

Hello, friends!

My third holy grail foundation is actually the first one I found back in December 2013: the stunning By Terry Terrybly Densiliss foundation {available at Barney’s, Space NKBeauty.com, and Beautylish}.  My other two holy grail foundation can be found here and here.  Here’s what Beautylish has to say about this lovely foundation:

Terrybly Densiliss Wrinkle Control Serum Foundation review shade 2 cream ivory

Terrybly Densiliss is a foundation serum enriched in skincare benefits with wrinkle control and firming properties that blends in like a second-skin. Wrinkles, whether deep or newly appearing, are targeted so that even the most lined skins are exceptionally smoothed. Its exclusive Densiliss technology, combined with the Mimetic Factor, a patented plant active ingredient, simulates fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by mimetism, acting at the heart of cellular mechanisms, imparting an immediate and long-lasting rejuvenating effect. The complexion is luminous, wrapped in an optimal and ultra-natural biomimetic coverage. The contours are reshaped and appear lifted, wrinkles look perfectly smoothed, the skin’s texture is refined and firmer with a newfound radiance and resplendently younger-looking.

Before By Terry Densiliss, I had nearly given up on finding a foundation that actually matched my skin tone.  And I literally tried them all: Mac, Chanel, Tom Ford, Armani, Make Up Forever, Bourjois, Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown, etc. My skin is approximately N10 – meaning I have very fair skin with neutral undertones {neither pink nor yellow}.  Most foundations are too dark, too pink, or too yellow.  If I found a formula I liked, I mixed primer, moisturizer, and even white foundation to try to create the perfect color. Or I would find a color that was close {like Bobbi Brown’s Skin foundation in Alabaster} only to be disappointed by the formula {only lasts about 5 hours on my skin}.  So when I discovered the Beauty Professor’s blog, and read her spot on color descriptions and glowing review of the formula, I couldn’t wait to try it.

I was surprised to find that the lightest shade of this foundation likely wouldn’t work for me based on Rachel’s swatches and descriptions.  In most foundation lines, especially those that do not have parallel numbering systems based on skin tone {like Yves Saint Laurent}, the lightest shade had always been the closest match for my skin.  But I could tell from Rachel’s pictures that shade 1 would be too pink.  I chose shade 2 {cream ivory} and it was the first foundation that truly matched my skin tone!  Cream ivory is fair without being pink or yellow, and the creamy formula melts into my skin to create a flawless, natural looking base.

Photo by Nathan French Photography

This foundation provides medium to full coverage but never looks cakey, and it truly feels weightless on the skin.  My face looks better and better throughout the day, and it gives me a lit from within glow.  It’s also a great foundation for long work days, because the lasting power is impressive {especially when used with the By Terry Densiliss primer}.  When I want a bit more luminosity, I’ll mix a dab of Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonder Glow {like I did today}. The Densiliss foundation is on the more expensive end, but a little bit goes a long way, and the stunning coverage is worth every penny.  It’s also the first foundation I finished in years {I’m on my second bottle and have one in the wings just in case!}.  So although the price seems steep, it’s far less than total price of the countless foundations I purchased that didn’t work.

Here’s the rest of the makeup I’m wearing in the photo above.

Transformation Tuesday: 30 Days of Lipstick

Hello friends!

This April, The Zoe Report posted about a beauty challenge that I simply could not resist: 30 days, 30 different lipsticks.

the zoe project 30 days of lipstick

Like many beauty addicts, I have accumulated quite a collection of lip products over the years.  But even with a plethora of options {yes, I really do need 50 shades of red}, I can’t help play favorites with a few go-to products that tend to be in my handbag at all times.

{I’m looking at you, Stila Beso.}

I decided to follow along with the challenge to mix things up.  Although I didn’t post every day, I didn’t repeat any lipsticks either, and it was so fun!

If you feel like you’re in a makeup rut, I recommend trying something similar.  Changing your lipstick is a quick and easy way to vary your look.  But you don’t need 30 lipsticks to play along; I think it would be just as fun to try it on a weekly basis!  I’ve included all the products I used and where you can find them below.  You can also view the challenge on Instagram with the hashtag tzrbeautychallenge.  Hope you enjoy!

Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it!

xoxo,
Jenn

My Daily Sunscreen {And How to Get One for Free}

Hello friends!

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month?  I had been thinking about sharing my favorite daily sunscreens, but I felt it was even more important after I saw and shared this post on Facebook.  Sobering to say the least…  And in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I would love to give you one of my favorite products!  Please keep reading to find out more.

First, it should go without saying that tanning beds are not okay. Aside from rapidly aging your skin, it’s proven to be seriously dangerous.  When I first moved to California, I fell into the tanning bed trap to try to fit into what I thought was the “California Girl” mold. Thankfully it didn’t last long, partly because of the effects of daily tanning I saw on my friends: leathery skin is no bueno.  {I hope they have stopped tanning too!}

I’ve been wearing sunscreen nonstop for the past 10+ years and I’ve come to love my fair skin, especially since I found pale foundations to match it.  {Some of my favorites are discussed here, here, and here.}  But my arsenal lacked two key products: a daily body sunscreen that didn’t leave a white cast or leave my skin feeling greasy or sticky, and a way to reapply sunscreen over makeup without undoing all the work.  Today I’m sharing these two gems with you.

Rodan and Fields Body Sunscreen + Goldfaden MD Sun Visor Spray

They are both SPF 30, which is perfect for my normal daily routine.  {I do prefer a heavier body sunscreen if I’m going to be in the sun for an extended period of time, especially around water.  This lotion and this spray are two of my favorites.}  But while I love those for vacation, I don’t want to “feel” like I’m wearing sunscreen in my daily life {or smell like it either}.

Rodan and Fields Essentials Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body Sunscreen

I’ve tried so many drugstore and high end lotions with sunscreen in my hunt to find one that actually felt like lotion.  And the Rodan + Fields Essentials Body Sunscreen is the first one to actually deliver.  It absorbs quickly, has a pleasant scent that immediately fades, and leaves your skin moisturized without being at all sticky or greasy.  There’s no white cast, nor does it leave a shiny finish.  It doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin and it’s great for the whole family (men, women, and kiddos). It’s also the first sunscreen I’ve ever been able to apply to the part in my hair without causing the roots to get greasy or look dirty.   {There’s nothing worse than a sun burn on your scalp!  Shampooing is miserable, and the peeling, flaking aftermath is not sexy.}

Goldfaden MD Sun Visor SPF 30

Goldfaden MD Sun Visor SPF 30 is another recent discovery that never leaves my handbag.  For years I’ve wrestled with how to reapply sunscreen during the day without disturbing my makeup.  I tried powder sunscreens but they just don’t agree with my dry skin. This spray is indispensable: it’s light, absorbs quickly, doesn’t disturb makeup, and doesn’t leave a white or powdery residue.  It’s also great under makeup {or as a base sunscreen} if you feel like you want a bit more protection.  It does have more of a “sunscreeny” fragrance, but it fades immediately.  You only need a spray or two to cover your whole face, so this bottle will last a long time {especially if it’s a backup to your regular morning sunscreen}.

Speaking of which, I love my current morning routine!

Unblemish Regimen Redefine Triple Defense Treatment Redefine Eye Cream

The Redefine Triple Defense Treatment contains a broad spectrum SPF 30, keeps my dry skin soft and hydrated, and contains a clinically proven concentration of powerful peptides to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and visibly firm skin.  And it is a dream under makeup!!  I also love the Reverse Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Sunscreen for days when I know I’ll be spending more time outside.

Screen Shot 2015-05-13 at 3.56.13 PM

Each of Rodan + Fields sunscreens have also been awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. This designation is only granted to sun protection products that meet stringent criteria and provide scientific data to demonstrate that the product sufficiently and safely aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.

And each of the Rodan + Fields regimens comes with a sunscreen.  In order to protect yourself from the health risks, everyone should be wearing daily sunscreen: men and women of all skin color, regardless of how quickly your skin tans or burns.  It’s just not worth the risk to skip this simple and effective preventative measure.  Which leads me to the giveaway!!

tumblr_n0alxky6nZ1s3y9slo2_500

From now through May 31st, I will give one of my favorite Rodan + Fields Essentials Body Sunscreens to everyone who purchases a skincare regimen through our Preferred Customer program.  Please send me an email so we can figure out which regimen is right for you! {jenn.m.french at gmail dot com}  It’s the perfect time of year to get started on an SPF routine before those long summer days of fun.  As one of my fellow consultants wisely said, “Your skin will be with you until the end…treat it well.”

Thanks so much for reading!

Jenn

Makeup Monday: Holy Grail Foundation #2

Hello, friends!

I had already planned on sharing another one of my holy grail foundations today – Yves Saint Laurent’s Fusion Ink Foundation – and then I discovered that it’s currently 10% off at Nordstrom!  How’s that for serendipity?!  {It’s also available at Sephora.}

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau B10 Porcelain J.Crew Factory paisley jewelry tray

This was my go-to foundation during last year’s very hot summer in Southern California, and I’m so excited to add it back into my rotation.  It was the winner of Allure magazine’s ‘Best of Beauty’ Award for Best Foundation in 2014, and I couldn’t agree more.  Here’s the official description, courtesy of Nordstrom:

“Fusion Ink Foundation feels like a feather but wears like an ink, bringing you color without compromise.  The exclusive fine-as-ink formula perfects your skin while wearing weightlessly all day without ever feeling cakey or heavy, all while bringing you 24 hours of soft matte perfection and comfort.”

This foundation is very “liquidy,” but don’t let the formula fool you: it is highly pigmented, which means a little bit goes a long way {i.e., that little bottle will last forever}.  Fusion Ink melts into your face to reveal the most skin-like finish of any foundation I have ever tried, and layers beautifully up to full coverage.

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau B10 Porcelain

Personally, I find it applies best with my fingers, although I do use my trusty BeautyBlender to blend after applying concealer, especially around my nose and chin.v I also prefer to apply it to the back of my hand, rather than straight from the wand.  Trust me, you will need less of this product than you think, and if you go apply straight from the wand you may end up with more product than you need.

When I first started using Fusion Ink, before I discovered Rodan + Fields, I used to dip the wand in four times to cover my acne scars and active blemishes; I applied two to three layers where I needed the most coverage {my cheeks and chin}. Today, my scars are almost gone and I’m virtually blemish free, so this one dip is more than enough to cover my entire face.  Here’s an un-edited picture of my finished face in natural light:

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau B10 Porcelain Buxom Monte Carlo Color No Filter 2

See what I mean about highly pigmented??  The coverage of this foundation blows my mind, but I love that I can still see my freckles.  I do find that the foundation “sets” in about two minutes, so I recommend using concealer immediately afterwards and blending with a sponge or brush to ensure everything places nicely on your face. Similarly, I usually wait to apply powder blush, bronzer, or highlighter until after it sets.

Here are the rest of the products I used to complete the look:

Flat Lay YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau Buxom Monte Carlo Color Benefit Hervana Charlotte Tilbury Fat Full Lashes Anastasia Beverly Hills brow pencil blonde Cle de Peau Beate concealer Stila lush lips primer

If you struggle to find that perfect match for your skin, I highly recommend Yves Saint Laurent foundations.  Unlike M.A.C., Chanel, and many other brands, YSL makes three color families: B {for neutral undertones}, BR {for rosy undertones}, and BD {for warm/golden undertones}.  Not sure which shade is right for you?  Check out these helpful swatches.  I wear B10, porcelain, and it’s absolutely the perfect shade for my skin: not too pink, not too yellow, not too dark.

Here are two more pictures of the finished look, this time slightly edited to compensate for the very bright white walls and shades that reflect the natural light in our bedroom. {These pictures accurately reflect the colors of my makeup and my dress.}

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau B10 Porcelain Buxom Monte Carlo Color Corrected

I don’t need to set it with powder, and I can wear it comfortably for hours without needing a touch up.  It doesn’t separate, move, or get patchy {even on my normal to dry skin}, but it does get a bit dewier over time without ever looking greasy or oily.  I can’t speak to the claim of 24 hour wear, but honestly, why would you ever need foundation to last that long?!  But here’s a no filter picture from September 2014 on an 80+ degree evening after nearly 12 hours of wear and two 75-mile train rides:

YSL Yves Saint Laurent Fusion Ink Foundation Le Teint Encre de Peau B10 Porcelain J.Crew Silk cat-print blouse in bunglow blue no filter

Pretty amazing, no?  {I just realized I’m wearing the same earrings too.  This post was clearly meant to be.}

If you haven’t tried this gem yet, now is the perfect time.  Please let me know if you have any questions, and if you’ve tried it, I would love to know what you think!

As always, thank you so very much for reading!

Transformation Tuesday: ScarFace Undone

Hello friends!

Last week I shared my personal struggle with adult acne {the good, the bad, and the ugly} and my before and after pictures using the Unblemish line from Rodan + Fields. Thank you so very much for your kind messages in response to my post! I appreciate your support, and I am so, so excited for those of you who are on your way to better skin as a result!  My favorite part of this business is helping people, and I can’t wait to hear how your new products are changing your skin for the better. ❤

This week I wanted to share another transformation: the incredibly brave Danita Clark Able. She wrote about her successful battle with skin cancer and how our Redefine products helped heal her scar tissue after surgery. Her story is absolutely amazing, and you won’t believe the results she achieved! It brought tears to my eyes. Her takeaway? “Your skin will be with you until the end…treat it well.”  Indeed.

This story is especially close to my heart, as my own mother is a cancer survivor. She’s using the Reverse regimen to combat dark spots on her face, the hormonal aftermath of chemo and radiation. I absolutely believe that Rodan + Fields lives up to their promise: changing skin + changing lives.

Thank you so much for reading!

red clay ponderings

This past October 2014, I had surgery on my face. The surgery was to remove skin cancer from beneath the surface of my skin.

September, the month of impending change, is when I learned I had cancer. Before surgery, I had a couple of weeks to think about the alien living below my eyes, beneath my skin. I hated the idea of something foreign living there. Knowing it was caused by too many unprotected days in the sun, I vowed to never again go outside without wearing a good quality sunscreen. I’ve honored the vow.

Below is a photo of the day I learned that yellow fireball had not been my friend.

I had both dreaded and looked forward to surgery. I was not excited about having my faced opened up, but I was anxious to get the show on the road. October, one of my favorite months, ushered in…

Transformation Tuesday: My Before + After Pictures!

Hello friends!

Thanks to the magic of photo editing apps and Instagram filters, it’s easy to look like you have perfect skin.  Real women can now achieve the same false perfection that we’ve been ogling in magazines for years.  But real life?  That’s a whole different story.

I’ve written before about my love for full coverage foundations.  And while I do love makeup (and always will!), that love grew out of necessity: I’ve suffered from adult acne for years.  And because my skin is so fair, those pimples don’t fade after a week or two. In fact, before I started using Rodan + Fields, they never faded, no matter what products I tried (including some heavy hitters like La Mer, SK-II, Dr. Dennis Gross, etc.).  I had angry red scars, and inflamed red skin, and the thought of leaving the house without a healthy dose of spackle was inconceivable to me.

And if you don’t think it means what I think it means, here’s a true confession: last year I was working from home when my husband cut his finger on a china bowl while doing dishes.  And I took one minute (I promise!) to put foundation on before we went to get stitches.  I wish I were kidding… But today we’re getting real.  I’ve skipped Facetime calls with my family on lazy makeup-free weekends, and even missed an indoor water park on a family vacation because my skin was being particularly difficult.  It’s really not about vanity; I know that my friends and family love me regardless of what my skin looks like.  But if you suffer from acne, you understand that these insecurities run deep.

When it comes to skincare results, a picture is worth a thousand words.  Rodan + Fields even offers a free regimen if you post your before and after pictures to the corporate website.  When I first started using the products, I dutifully took my before pictures with absolutely no intention whatsoever under any circumstance of showing them to anyone {see above}.  And then I took my 60 day pictures.  Here they are, back to back with no filter, no editing, and no makeup:

adult acne before and after unblemish rodan and fields

Skincare is a journey, and I still suffer from the occasional stress/hormone/life induced breakout. But for the first time in six years, my acne scars are fading.  My skin is calm, soft, and smooth.  And when I don’t wear makeup on the weekends, I feel comfortable in my own skin.  That feeling is priceless, my friends!!  I’m amazed by the results I’ve achieved so far and can’t wait to see how my face looks in another 60 days!

{In case you’re wondering, I use a combination of Unblemish and Redefine products to combat acne and the effects of aging.  My skin is dry, so I use both the Redefine lotions, and I am madly in love with the night renewing serum.  The gentle retinol formula not only helps improve skin texture, firmness, and wrinkles, but aids in the acne fight.  I also use our eye cream.}

I’m sharing this picture today for a few reasons.  First and foremost, I want everyone who has suffered with adult acne to know that there is hope!!  Of course not every product line works for everyone.  {I tried Proactiv as a teenager and it did play nicely with my dry skin.}  But with a 60 day money back guarantee, there’s really nothing to lose.  And even if you choose to purchase at retail prices, most regimens will cost less per day than one grande latte from Starbucks.*   Second, you will only hear about Rodan + Fields through independent consultants like me.  They don’t advertise, and there aren’t any infomercials.  Similarly, you can only buy the products from independent consultants.  The doctors made an unprecedented move from brick and mortar stores to partner with entrepreneurs who want more from life than the 9 to 5  (or 9 to 9…) grind.

Thank you for reading and please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to get started on your journey to the best skin of your life!  It would be an honor to help you.

xoxo,
Jenn

* I calculated the retail price per day by dividing the cost of the regimen by the 60 day supply (e.g., $171.00 / 60 = $2.85).  If you decide to become a Preferred Customer, it’s even less.
