Why Do We Demand Women Be Professionally Demure?

THIS.

Typewriter for One

I hope people respect my work. My assertive suggestions and pointed questions are driven by a quest to produce stellar work. And I do really good fucking work. But there’s a reason I’ll never work in an office again, and it’s that when you’re a Woman at Work churning out top tier product isn’t enough.

We also have to be nonthreatening.

To be a Woman in the Workplace is to find yourself atop a very thin wire. Fall to one side, and you’re too demanding and shrill, fall to the other and you’ll never be seen as a leader. And your destiny could come down to whether or not you use enough exclamation point in your emails or use the word “just” in front of sentences so as to seem timid enough not to offend.

Worse yet, the senior female staff can be the most ardent professors at the School…

Calling All Magpies

Hello, friends!

It’s been a minute (or two) since I last posted; the end of 2015 flew by.  I’m absolutely loving my job with W by Worth, and it’s helped me meet so many amazing women!  Here’s a very quick recap of the last four months: two really fun pop-up trunk shows in our home (still can’t believe I get paid to play dress up), a booth at Fashion Week San Diego, shopping events at beautiful homes in S.D. and L.A., a wonderful week in Wisconsin with my family for Thanksgiving, sang in six concerts over eight days in December, joined an incredible women’s network called Lipstick Sister, and actually spent the holidays on vacation (for the first time since law school).  It was the perfect ending to 2015 and left me refreshed and ready to hit the ground running this week.  I am beyond excited for 2016!

To top it off, I received* this truly stunning iPhone case from AT&T to review and share with you.  I’ve been using it for the past month, and it is easily the nicest case I’ve ever had.  If you’re a magpie like me, you need this case in your life.  The sparkle factor is out of this world!  Here’s a picture Nathan snapped when we were out chasing rainbows.

IMG_4561

Case-Mate knocked this one out of the park, and here’s their official (and accurate) description: “Admire the shimmering splendor of genuine crystal accented with premium leather. Each crystal is thoughtfully selected and carefully placed to create a dynamic shimmer, adding further distinction and a unique, elegant look.”

I can’t tell you the number of women who have commented on this case over the last month.  It is absolutely gorgeous in real life – “shimmering splendor” is not an exaggeration!  I will try to put a video of the sparkle in all its glory on my Instagram account soon.  And looks aside, the case works great as well.  I love how easy the buttons are to use, which is an issue with lots of cases I’ve had, and the mix of matte and shiny metal accents gives it a super luxe finish.  I also like how the case extends away from the back of my phone to give extra scratch protection to the camera.  My one complaint is that the crystals make the case a bit heavy, but the sheer brilliance easily makes up for it.  And I figure I’m getting a little extra exercise when I lift my iPhone. 😉

You can order the case here, and I highly recommend it!  After all, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. (Crazy cat lady shirt not included.)  I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and that 2016 brings you much joy.  And stay tuned for future posts!  My very simple New Year’s resolution is to be happy, and blogging always makes me smile.  Thank you so much for stopping by!

xoxo,
Jenn

* The case was graciously provided for review but the opinions  are all my own.

Get ready to see this baby on constant repeat once we finally get some fall temperatures.  The fit is amazing; I’ve tried on a few moto jackets before but never one that flattered a woman’s silhouette as well.  It also comes in a stunning red matte (perfect for Badger or Aztec fans!). Please don’t hesitate to email me if you’d like more info { jfrench (at) wbyworth (dot) com }.

Thank you to everyone who has entered so far!  I appreciate your support and it makes me so happy to give back to this incredible online community.  {Although the more I look at this picture, the more I realize I add this scarf to my closet too.  😉}

Fall Fashion Giveaway

Hello, friends!

It’s a rare rainy morning in San Diego, which fits perfectly with today’s post because I have fall on the brain!  Fall has always been my favorite season: the crisp air, the changing leaves, and best of all, the clothes.  I love the colors, especially burgundy, and I can’t wait to pull out my favorite jackets, tights, and scarves.  Although we love being back in San Diego, I miss living in a cooler climate during fall, so scarves are my go-to way to add layers without too much warmth. Speaking of which…

W by Worth Plaid Scarf

I am super excited to give away this gorgeous W by Worth plaid scarf!  It’s been an amazing three weeks in my new role with W, and I can’t wait to share these beautiful clothes with you. ❤️  I fell head over heels the moment I saw this plaid beauty: with shades of ginger, walnut, tea rose, and ivory it’s easy to wear with so many outfits, and I love the touch of fringe on the edges.  The scarf measures 27″ x 78″ and the wool/cotton blend is perfect for adding a touch of fall in all climates.  It retails at $148 but can be yours for free – no purchase necessary!  Click here to enter {and I promise you won’t get any spam from me.}

This year I’m more excited for fall than ever because I will be showing the new W by Worth Fall Collection from September 4 through 10th in our home! If you’re in San Diego, I would love for you to come: it’s a unique, intimate shopping experience and our clothing is not available in stores.  How does it work?  Email Me to book your one-on-one appointment, and we’ll play a little adult dress up {with wine, naturally}.    Not in San Diego during my show?  I would love to give you a virtual tour {and you can still have wine, this time from the comfort of your own home 😉}.  Visit my website to book an online appointment.  Your virtual tour will include beautiful imagery that is not available online.  Here’s a preview of our suede fringe skirt {which is dying to find its way into my closet.}

W153_Closets_Preseason_04

Thank you so very much for all of your support during the last few years, my dear friends!  I have loved interacting with you all either through comments, on Twitter, or through Instagram.  I hope you all enter my giveaway, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Jenn

Holy Grail Foundation #3

Hello, friends!

My third holy grail foundation is actually the first one I found back in December 2013: the stunning By Terry Terrybly Densiliss foundation {available at Barney’s, Space NKBeauty.com, and Beautylish}.  My other two holy grail foundation can be found here and here.  Here’s what Beautylish has to say about this lovely foundation:

Terrybly Densiliss Wrinkle Control Serum Foundation review shade 2 cream ivory

Terrybly Densiliss is a foundation serum enriched in skincare benefits with wrinkle control and firming properties that blends in like a second-skin. Wrinkles, whether deep or newly appearing, are targeted so that even the most lined skins are exceptionally smoothed. Its exclusive Densiliss technology, combined with the Mimetic Factor, a patented plant active ingredient, simulates fibroblasts and collagen synthesis by mimetism, acting at the heart of cellular mechanisms, imparting an immediate and long-lasting rejuvenating effect. The complexion is luminous, wrapped in an optimal and ultra-natural biomimetic coverage. The contours are reshaped and appear lifted, wrinkles look perfectly smoothed, the skin’s texture is refined and firmer with a newfound radiance and resplendently younger-looking.

Before By Terry Densiliss, I had nearly given up on finding a foundation that actually matched my skin tone.  And I literally tried them all: Mac, Chanel, Tom Ford, Armani, Make Up Forever, Bourjois, Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown, etc. My skin is approximately N10 – meaning I have very fair skin with neutral undertones {neither pink nor yellow}.  Most foundations are too dark, too pink, or too yellow.  If I found a formula I liked, I mixed primer, moisturizer, and even white foundation to try to create the perfect color. Or I would find a color that was close {like Bobbi Brown’s Skin foundation in Alabaster} only to be disappointed by the formula {only lasts about 5 hours on my skin}.  So when I discovered the Beauty Professor’s blog, and read her spot on color descriptions and glowing review of the formula, I couldn’t wait to try it.

I was surprised to find that the lightest shade of this foundation likely wouldn’t work for me based on Rachel’s swatches and descriptions.  In most foundation lines, especially those that do not have parallel numbering systems based on skin tone {like Yves Saint Laurent}, the lightest shade had always been the closest match for my skin.  But I could tell from Rachel’s pictures that shade 1 would be too pink.  I chose shade 2 {cream ivory} and it was the first foundation that truly matched my skin tone!  Cream ivory is fair without being pink or yellow, and the creamy formula melts into my skin to create a flawless, natural looking base.

This foundation provides medium to full coverage but never looks cakey, and it truly feels weightless on the skin.  My face looks better and better throughout the day, and it gives me a lit from within glow.  It’s also a great foundation for long work days, because the lasting power is impressive {especially when used with the By Terry Densiliss primer}.  When I want a bit more luminosity, I’ll mix a dab of Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonder Glow {like I did today}. The Densiliss foundation is on the more expensive end, but a little bit goes a long way, and the stunning coverage is worth every penny.  It’s also the first foundation I finished in years {I’m on my second bottle and have one in the wings just in case!}.  So although the price seems steep, it’s far less than total price of the countless foundations I purchased that didn’t work.

Here’s the rest of the makeup I’m wearing in the photo above.

Beach Cruisin

Hello friends,

Happy Friday!  The weather has been absolutely gorgeous this week, and I can’t wait for the official start of summer mañana.  And nothing makes me happier when the weather gets warmer than having a flexible schedule.  This week, Nathan and I went to La Jolla to do some scouting for two upcoming photoshoots.  It was overcast during the early afternoon, which made for some great lighting.  I played model for a bit so we could test the location and effects of June Gloom, and so I thought I’d share some of the pictures with you.  It was a J.Crew Everything kinda day, as usual.

The water was preeeetty cold at first, but once I got my feet wet I couldn’t stay away.  The waves were crystal clear, and it turned into a stunningly beautiful day.  Oh, and we did some model casting too.  😉
